Why did I receive a higher assessment after filing my annual return?

A large figure can be unsettling. Before assuming there is a mistake, let’s check what that figure includes.

The short answer

Separate the tax from the balance

The amount shown may be what remains to pay, rather than the entire annual tax. Compare the tax calculation with payments on account, withholding and other credited payments.

A small example helps

In a fictional example, annual tax is NIS 20,000 and credited payments total NIS 16,000. The remaining difference is NIS 4,000 before any additional charges or adjustments. This is simple arithmetic, not your personal tax calculation.

Still not adding up?

Gather the assessment, filed return and payment records. Check where the difference comes from and whether supporting evidence is missing. Keep the payment deadline in view: asking for clarification does not mean it has been postponed.
