“I am an established business consultant with an office registered for VAT in my name. I now want to open a falafel shop that I also own. Do I need another registration, or can both businesses operate under the same number?”
The question has been reworded based on the case presented to the firm.
The firm's answer
In this case: the same dealer, with an additional business activity.
When the same individual operates both activities, a different line of business does not automatically require another VAT registration. The VAT rule is one registration for several businesses of the same person. Update the activity and address with the Tax Authority and prepare to maintain the shop's accounts.
A VAT-registered dealer is a VAT status, not a limited company. For an individual, the dealer number is linked to their identity number; a different trading name for the shop does not itself create another dealer. A company or partnership requires a different review.
How this works in daily operations
- The consultancy: invoices and receipts for consulting services under the registered dealer's details.
- The falafel shop: a cash-register system and sales documentation appropriate to the shop, using the same dealer number where a single registration is retained.
- Separate accounting records: classify income, purchases and expenses by activity so the profitability of the consultancy and shop can be viewed separately.
- An overall picture: combine both activities' figures for the same taxpayer's and dealer's reporting. An overall profit and loss statement can be presented alongside activity breakdowns; the required reports and books depend on the applicable rules.
You can be a business consultant and falafel-shop owner under the same registration. Keep the identity and registration together, while organizing activity records so each can be understood and documented.
VAT registration does not replace reviewing business licensing and food-business operating requirements. If employees are hired, review employer obligations too. This is general information; registration and books must be adapted to the business's circumstances.
